Peter Liese: MEP knows future German chancellor for more than 36 years / He will fight for Ukraine, support existing climate targets while reducing red tape and putting strong focus on economic growth and security as well as fighting illegal migration

“Friedrich Merz is above all a convinced pro-European,” said Peter Liese, Member of the European Parliament and spokesperson on environment and climate for the biggest group in the European Parliament (EPP, Christian Democrats). Liese knows Friedrich Merz for more than 36 years. In fact, Merz was his predecessor in the European Parliament.

“In all the 36 years, Friedrich Merz never allowed any doubt about his pro-European agenda. He will strongly support Ukraine and he is also in favour of the existing EU climate targets and in particular supports the European ETS, which means ETS 1 and ETS 2. But at the same time, he is a strong proponent of reducing red tape strong economy and putting security, internal and external, in the centre of European politics. He will strongly fight for better European policy against illegal migration. Friedrich Merz has not only great experience as MEP and MP but also strong ties to the U.S. from his past as Chair of the Atlantic Bridge, an association that works for cooperation of the United States with Germany and the European Union. He will be taken serious by the Trump Administration and will also tell them strongly when they are wrong. His experience in the economic world, not only as Chair of the German department of Blackrock but also with a lot of responsibilities in SMEs, for example, a family owned paper company, will help to bring the right direction for German and European economic recovery,” Liese said.
